Motivating or influencing others to accept your ideas or comply with your requests is not always an easy task. Not counting physical force, intimidation, manipulation or extortion, there are only three ways in which we can get others to take action:

  • Command
  • Negotiate
  • Persuade

Commanding others requires authority - it is the primary protocol in military situations, but is not as effective in personal or business environments as it most often brings about reluctant compliance. Negotiating is a powerful tool, but has major limitations. It is fundamentally an adversarial endeavor, despite the concept of win-win strategies; when negotiating, someone is always required to give-in.

Persuasion skill, on the other hand, fits most situations better than the other two options and does so with a positive psychology of interactive communication. Persuasion creates its own power position and, since it's non-adversarial, those persuaded almost always feel comfortable and satisfied with the outcome. It has become a major component of leadership and is often a prerequisite to success in today's business world.
